The Jessi Combs Foundation

October 22, 2019 //  by Horsepower & Heels

I ask that… all of you celebrate my life and everything I stand for. I ask that you do everything in your power to share my mission, what I put my entire life on the line for. To reveal to this world what they are capable of, by showing them the confidence and abilities they already possess.”

Jessi Combs

There isn’t many that embody the very spirit of female gearhead empowerment more than Jessi Combs. Best known for her independent and adventurous spirit, exemplary skills and a tremendous personality while hosting and starring in shows such as “Overhaulin’,” “Xtreme 4×4” and “Mythbusters.” Her talent and more importantly the empowerment that she inspired for women in the automotive industry and beyond is unparalleled.

Jessica Combs (July 27, 1980 – August 27, 2019)

With a lifelong desire to become a race car driver, her love for speed and machines began at a very young age. She boasted driving anything with wheels – from super cars to monster trucks, relics to rally cars, hot rods, two wheels, four wheels and even at times, no wheels. Sadly, it is only fitting she would leave us doing exactly what she loved – strapped within the North American Eagle Supersonic Speed Challenger in pursuit to become the Fastest Woman on Earth.

Her exceptional talent was demonstrated in a wide variety of forms – from work in her own metal fab shop building hot rods, motorcycles, custom trucks, race vehicles and more.

She also was a pioneer for women in automotive – championing the cause for women across the globe. She identified and provided solutions for women in the industry, developing a line of welding gear for ladies and putting women in automotive on the map with her role in All Girls Garage.

Her ability to lean-in and foster opportunity for women – achieving her own goals and maintaining a hands-on and fast paced life at speed will remain her legacy and will forever define Jessi in the hearts of people around the world.

The Jessi Combs Foundation Mission

The Jessi Combs Foundation

The Jessi Combs Foundation was founded in 2019. The mission of the foundation is to educate, inspire and empower the next generation of female trailblazers & stereotype-breakers.

What Would Jessi Do?

The guiding principle is simple – “What Would Jessi Do?” The foundation mission centers around three main concentrations – Educate. Inspire. Empower.

  • EDUCATE.
To build on Jessi’s belief in education and trade training for women, the foundation seeks to provide individual scholarships and foster in-kind support of educational and vocational training facilities with the objective to inspire and empower the next generation of female tradespeople. They also aim to continue workshops and live events designed to reach young aspiring women at the one-on-one level that Combs loved so much.
  • INSPIRE.
Constantly resetting the bar was a trait Jessi was known for, and the foundation wants to continue to raise the bar and inspire via foundation projects with Combs signature style in mind. They also seek to highlight the achievements, talent and arts of other inspiring women.
  • EMPOWER.
The foundation will empower women through grants and event sponsorships that align with the barrier smashing attitude Jessi embodied.

Terry Chandler leaves legacy of love

July 5, 2017 //  by Horsepower & Heels

NHRA Drag Racing mourns the loss of one of the most kindhearted and generous supporters in the sport.  Don Schumacher Racing sponsor and supporter, Terry Chandler leaves a legacy of love in her wake that has touched the lives of many people in the sport and in the community.   Her generosity and charitable efforts behind the Make-A-Wish and Infinite Hero Foundation NHRA Funny Car programs will continue to live on in the hearts of thousands.

Terry ChandlerSadly, Terry Chandler lost her valiant fight with brain cancer on Tuesday, July 4th.  She was 65 years-old when she died in Florida with family and loved ones at her side.

Terry is a great human being who devoted the past few years to helping the Make-A-Wish and Infinite Hero foundations with her love and kindness by funding two of our Funny Car teams,” said Don Schumacher, DSR owner and close friend.    “Terry is such a beautiful person. She was so much more than a friend and partner. She is family. We will always see that wonderful smile of hers at the starting line.”

The native of New Mexico missed the NHRA Mello Yello Series event at Las Vegas in early April and a few days later underwent major surgery to partially remove one of three tumors in the front lobe of her brain.  An MRI determined that she was suffering from Glioblastoma cancer.    She was immersed in the fight of her life and battled valiantly to the end.

Terry Chandler was presented with the NHRA Blaine Johnson Award in 2015 for her dedication to helping others.

I love to race,” she told Autoweek magazine in a 2015 article. “And bless my heart, I love to win. These gol-darned cars, I just love ’em.”

Earlier that year, she was described as being “the most influential woman in drag racing” by the Inland Valley (Calif.) Newspapers.

I never dreamed that I would be blessed in a way that would allow me to help others,” she told the Southern California newspaper.   “Helping people is one of the most important things in the world to me – my daddy, John R. Gray, was an extremely giving man, and I learned from him how important it was to bless the lives of others. That is why this means so much to me. I feel very fortunate to be in this position.”

Terry Chandler became a fixture at NHRA national events when her brother, Johnny Gray, drove a Funny Car for DSR.  In 2013, Terry and Johnny decided to fund the car he drove as a tribute to their late father John R. Gray, a self-made man who rose to legendary status in the New Mexico and north Texas oil industry.

Upon Johnny’s retirement from driving at the end of that season, Terry began funding the team and added driver Tommy Johnson Jr.   Terry and her husband, Doug, own and operate Chandler Aviation at the Cavern City Air Terminal in Carlsbad, N.M.   Instead of flying the colors of Chandler Aviation on Johnson’s Dodge Charger, she chose to use the racecar as a platform to promote awareness for a great cause. The car was painted and the transporters were wrapped with a striking Make-A-Wish design.   She wanted her racecar to be a “giving car.”

Chandler and DSR host “Wish Kids” and their families to the VIP hospitality pavilion next to the race team’s pit area on Saturdays at each of the 24 Mello Yello events held in 21 markets across the country. The Make-A-Wish crew has the opportunity to engage with the children, giving them a tour of the pit area and racecar.

After a few months of committing to fund the Make-A-Wish team, another DSR team appeared close to dissolving when Terry Chandler, the woman with the infectious smile, stepped in to fund Jack Beckman’s team and donated its branding to the Infinite Hero Foundation, a non-profit organization that combats the most difficult front line issues by providing grants to help the physical and psychological challenges faced by returning military veterans.

More than $300,000 has been raised by the sale of “challenge coins” Jack Beckman carries on each run for a $100 donation to Infinite Hero and nearly $500,000 has been raised for the organization through Terry’s efforts.

For the past two years, she funded the Riley Kids Funny Car to benefit Riley Hospital for Children in Indiana during the prestigious U.S. Nationals near Indianapolis. She contributed additionally during DSR’s annual Open House that weekend that also raised funds for Riley Kids, often bidding on items she would donate back to the effort.

She funded countless Make-A-Wish dreams to provide monumental memories.  She always made it clear to the “Wish Kids” that the racecar was their car. She would proclaim, “This is YOUR racecar.”

And it will continue to be this weekend when her Make-A-Wish and Infinite Hero teams race for her during the NHRA Route 66 Nationals near Chicago.

Terry is just an incredible lady, and we’ll never know how many lives she impacted,” Don added. “We’ll miss her every day, but we’ll never forget her smile and he big heart.”

A private funeral service will be held with a public memorial tentatively set for over Labor Day Weekend near Indianapolis during the NHRA U.S. Nationals.

Shirley mourns loss of son, John Muldowney

April 28, 2017 //  by Horsepower & Heels

John MuldowneyNHRA Top Fuel champion, Shirley Muldowney mourns the loss of her son, John Muldowney, who passed away at the age of 59 yesterday in Springfield, MO.

The only son of the drag racing trailblazer and her first husband Jack, John Muldowney grew up in the middle of the excitement surrounding Shirley and her legendary drag racing career.   Beginning in elementary school, John always had a hand in helping his mom at the races.   He packed parachutes, changed oil and spark plugs, and eventually went on to join the crew full-time after graduating from high school.   A notable fabricator, he stayed working on her Top Fuel Dragsters as part of the crew throughout her career.  He assisted his famous mother in her four Top Fuel championship runs (three in NHRA, one in AHRA).

After her retirement from Top Fuel and drag racing, John Muldowney continued in the sport, eventually working for a variety of other racing teams, machine shops and fabricators.   Outside of the sport, he also worked as a fabricator for Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and even for NASA’s Space Shuttle program.

A statement from Muldowney’s camp listed the 59 year-old’s cause of death as a blood clot.   Shirley Muldowney also added that in lieu of flowers, fans and friends are asked to consider making a donation to Shirley’s Kids, the 501(c)(3) charity created in Shirley Muldowney’s honor that helps kids in need at various stops on the NHRA tour.

Donations can easily be made at ShirleysKids.org.

Shirley Muldowney diagnosed with Lung Cancer

May 24, 2016 //  by Horsepower & Heels

Shirley MuldowneyLegendary NHRA three-time Top Fuel World Champion and Women in Racing pioneer, Shirley Muldowney has been diagnosed with Lung Cancer, reported today by NHRA.com.   The 75 year-old has been diagnosed with Stage 2 lung cancer, and is scheduled to undergo surgery at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center in downtown Charlotte, NC early tomorrow morning to remove the tumor from her right lung.

Renowned thoracic and cardiac surgeon Dr. Harold Howe will lead the team performing the five-hour-long procedure.

I urge everyone to keep up with their health and get chest X-rays as often as possible to make sure they are OK,” the 75-year-old Muldowney said. “I’m a fighter, always have been, and I’m going to fight this as best I can with everything I got. Dr. Howe is the No. 1 guy in the business, and he’s as ready as I am to get this thing out of me.”

Muldowney began her racing career in the 1950s, becoming the first woman to earn a professional NHRA license in 1965.   She raced gas dragsters before graduating to Funny Car, winning her first major race in 1971 at the IHRA Southern Nationals.   She moved onto Top Fuel in 1973, and was the first woman to win an NHRA Professional class race in 1976 at the Columbus, OH Springnationals.

In 1974, she earned the NHRA Top Fuel championship after becoming the first driver in the class to win three consecutive national events. It was the first time a female driver had won a major motorsports title anywhere in the world. Muldowney earned the Top Fuel crown again in 1980 and 1982, and she earned the AHRA Top Fuel championship in 1981, her fourth major championship in a six-year period.

“The fans have always been what’s kept me going, and I’m sure people will be concerned about me now,” said Muldowney, who had a movie, Heart Like a Wheel, made about her life. “Well don’t be; I’ll be fine. There’s still a lot of things left I want to do.”

Shirley's KidsIn lieu of flowers or cards, Muldowney is asking her friends and fans to donate to her charity, Shirley’s Kids.  Muldowney has championed the charity this season, and already has helped four children in need with large cash donations at races in Gainesville, Charlotte, Houston, and Atlanta. Because of corporate support, Shirley’s Kids gives 100 percent of all donations to the children it helps.

The most joy I’ve had in years has come this season working with our little team at Shirley’s Kids,” Muldowney said. “Stan and Sheila Mae Holt have covered all our costs so all the money we raise goes to the kids, and Rob Geiger, Nicci Gustavus, and Frank Bellini have worked tirelessly to make this thing a success.   If people can find it in their hearts to make a donation, that would brighten my spirits immensely because I know where all the money in this charity goes — right to the kids that need it. And believe me, we have changed some people’s lives for the better. “

Due to her current medical condition and the doctor-recommended recovery and rehabilitation time, Muldowney’s agent, Geiger, announced that scheduled appearances at the NHRA national events in Englishtown and Bristol will be canceled.   Her future schedule will be largely dependent on her health moving forward, and other appearance dates will be announced on ShirleysKids.org.

Thank you in advance for all the love and prayers. It all helps. My sister [Linda Roque] and niece [Betty Peek] along with Stan and Sheila are here with me, so I’m in great hands.”

Alexis DeJoria accepts Sustainable Food Changemaker Award

May 11, 2016 //  by Horsepower & Heels

Sustainable Food Changemaker AwardNHRA Funny Car Drag Racer, Alexis DeJoria accepted the Sustainable Food Center’s prestigious Sustainable Food Changemaker Award today during the 9th annual Farm-to-Plate fundraiser at Barr Mansion in Austin, Texas.

2016 Sustainable Food Changemaker Award

The 2016 Sustainable Food Changemaker Award is being presented to the Austin-based Peace, Love & Happiness Foundation, established by Alexis DeJoria’s father and fellow Austin resident, John Paul DeJoria.

Alexis DeJoria, a recent Peace, Love & Happiness board inductee, proudly accepted the award on behalf of her father and his renowned organization. Since its establishment in 2011, the organization has committed to developing a sustainable planet through protecting animals and conserving the environment. Projects range from Grow Appalachia, the largest gardening project of its kind in the U.S., to Mobile Loaves and Fishes, a community village for people struggling with homelessness in Austin.

Sustainable Food Changemaker AwardAccording to Ronda Rutledge, Director at the Austin based Sustainable Food Center, the award signifies and honors the DeJoria family’s commitment to sustainable agriculture and food production and security.

We chose JP’s Peace, Love & Happiness Foundation because of John Paul’s commitment to sustainable agriculture, understanding the huge role that food production has in environmental stewardship,” said Rutledge.

The Peace, Love & Happiness Foundation has partnered with the Sustainable Food Center since 2012, sponsoring their teaching garden as part of their capital campaign. In the garden, school children join with the community to learn sustainable agriculture practices and gardening tips.

Alexis recently joined our board, and she has already been very involved in our projects — from volunteering on the ground level to conceptualizing new directions for investment,” said Constance Dykhuizen, Director of Peace, Love & Happiness. Dykhuizen added, “Her heart for protection of the environment fits in very well with John Paul’s long-standing commitment to sustainable food.”

DeJoria, a professional race car driver competing in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, has adopted her father’s philanthropic credo of ‘giving back whenever possible.’ From her efforts with Sallie Latimer’s water tower restoration fundraiser to her Free Mammograms for the Fans program, DeJoria considers it an honor to be able to accept the Sustainable Food Changemaker Award on behalf of her family’s foundation.

“Our family has been involved with many charities over the years, and I’m very fortunate to sit on the Board of Directors of the Peace, Love & Happiness Foundation. We donate our time, as well as financially, to various charities all over the world. I’m honored to be able to accept this award on behalf of my father, right here in our hometown,” said the Dripping Springs resident.

RPM Act: EPA ban threatening motorsports

March 10, 2016 //  by Horsepower & Heels

SEMA EPA Ban Threatening MotorsportsThere has been a confusing whirl of information circulating since February surrounding the EPA ban threatening motorsports.   The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and their recent regulations endanger the racing industry and automotive aftermarket.     The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) is fighting to safeguard automotive aftermarket manufacturers by fighting the EPA and the regulations that threaten the future of motorsports.

“This proposed regulation represents overreaching by the agency, runs contrary to the law and defies decades of racing activity where EPA has acknowledged and allowed conversion of vehicles,” said SEMA President and CEO Chris Kersting when the regulation was announced in February. “Congress did not intend the original Clean Air Act to extend to vehicles modified for racing and has re-enforced that intent on more than one occasion.”

The short of the story is that they seek to crackdown on automotive aftermarket manufacturers who produce racing parts that do not meet emission standards – even if they are labeled for off-road, recreational use.    The language chosen would make modifications of any kind to commercially-made vehicles illegal – a direct blow to the grassroots motorsports community.    The EPA’s stance is that under the Clean Air Protection Act, it has always been illegal to modify any motor vehicle – and that they are now exerting their authority to include race cars as they fall under the car-emission laws and are not part of non-road vehicles protected in the language (lawnmowers, agricultural tractors, industrial machinery, etc.).

SEMA activated its network to organize the racing community against the EPA, and within 24 hours had over 100,000 signatures collected petitioning the White House to block the EPA’s proposal that would make it illegal to convert street cars into racecars.

RPM Act – Fighting the EPA Ban threatening Motorsports

In response, Congress Introduced a Bill to safeguard the motorsports community.   Spearheaded by U.S. Reps. Patrick McHenry (R-NC), Henry Cuellar  (D-TX), Richard Hudson (R-NC), Bill Posey (R-FL) and Lee Zeldin (R-NY) , the bipartisan “Recognizing the Protection of Motorsports Act of 2016” (RPM Act), was introduced to clarify that it has always been legal to modify a street vehicle into a racecar used exclusively at the track. The practice was unquestioned until last year when the EPA proposed a new regulation which would make this activity illegal.

The SEMA Action Network (SAN) is enlisting the support of the automotive aftermarket and motorsports communities to push Congress to pass the RPM Act that will stop the EPA ban threatening motorsports.
As part of the motorsports community, we must rally together to ensure that our sport and livelihood is protected.
Visit the SEMA ACTION NETWORK campaign to write your local member of Congress asking for their support of the RPM Act!   SAN has created an easy-to-use form that will generate the letters on your behalf with your information.    Just fill out the form, and help fight the EPA ban threatening motorsports!

Shirley’s Kids

March 10, 2016 //  by Horsepower & Heels

Shirley's KidsOne of the pioneers for women in motorsports, Shirley “Cha Cha” Muldowney, will return to NHRA drag racing in 2016 at select stops on the schedule in support of the newly created Shirley’s Kids charity, which aims to help children in need.
“Drag racing has given me a wonderful life, and Shirley’s Kids will allow me to give something back,” Muldowney said. “With the tremendous support of Stan and Sheila Holt of Lupe Tortilla Mexican Restaurants and several corporate sponsors — that list keeps growing — I’ll be able to attend a bunch of races and visit with all of my friends and the great fans that have been with me for four-plus decades.”
Shirley’s Kids (www.ShirleysKids.org) aims to meet the goal of helping children in need at each of the races Muldowney attends in the coming year. The hope is to find children who are connected to drag racing in the various communities that have helped the sport prosper through the years.
“I wanted to be back out there more than I have been the last several years, but I wanted a purpose,” Muldowney said. “When my agent, Rob Geiger of Geiger Media Global, approached me with the idea to create a non-profit to benefit children, I probably had the quickest reaction time of my career in saying yes.”
Shirley Muldowney is slated to attend the NHRA national events Gainesville, Charlotte (both spring and fall), Houston, Atlanta, Englishtown, Bristol, Denver, Indy, Dallas, Las Vegas 2, and Pomona 2, as well as the Jr. Drag Racing Western Conference Finals in Tulsa, Okla. Other events may be added throughout the year.
“By starting our own 501(c)(3) charity, we will know exactly where all of the money goes, and that’s to the kids. Other charities become businesses and a lot of money ends up going to a lot of different areas, not the beneficiaries. We didn’t want that to happen, so we’ve taken all the legal steps to control everything. It’s the best way we know to make sure the kids are taken care of every time, and we will be fully transparent.”

A replica of Shirley Muldowney's 1977 dragster will be raffled for Shirley's Kids
Photo: Shirley Muldowney

Working in conjunction with NHRA, Muldowney will mingle with fans to spread the message about the Shirley’s Kids mission.  The charity also has a race car in the works that will be raffled off to raise money – a replica of Muldowney’s 1977 championship-winning dragster.   The car will be built to run in the Super Comp category and at bracket races. It will be on display in the Manufacturers Midway.

The three-time NHRA champ will present a big Shirley’s Kids check to a selected child benefactor at each race during driver introductions on Sunday morning.
“Many, many thanks to NHRA President Peter Clifford and his staff for their help in getting this started,” Muldowney said. “They have been so gracious and supportive and I thank them from my heart. I’m excited. You know, at 75 and with the injuries I sustained in my career really catching up with me, my driving days are over, but that doesn’t mean I can’t be a part of this wonderful world, and helping kids just makes it that much sweeter.”
Fans interested in learning more about Shirley’s Kids can visit www.ShirleysKids.org. Donations can be made on the website, with thank-you gifts up for grabs.  There will also be a line of Muldowney apparel and gear available at the PiranaZ souvenir trailer.
